Samsung returns in 2017 with two smartphone models, namely, the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and its big brother, the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+, which we will present.
We take the same one and make it bigger! With its Super AMOLED screen with a definition of 2,960 x 1,440 px, the device gains 1 cm more in diagonal.
Equipped with an eight-core Exynos 8895 chip (4 Exynos M2 and 4 ARM Cortex-A53 cores) clocked at 2.3 GHz and 4 GB of RAM, the smartphone has 64 GB of expandable storage via the addition of a microSD card.
At the network level, we can mention Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5, NFC, GPS, and 4G LTE category 16 compatibility (up to 1 GB per second of maximum theoretical speed).
Ergonomics and design:
As with the S8, the S8+ occupies 83% of the front surface thanks to the disappearance of the physical home button but also the brand's logo. The rendering is uncluttered and focuses the user on one thing: the screen!
The home button is replaced by a virtual button sensitive to finger pressure, on the bottom edge of the screen. From now on, to return to the menu, you just have to press at the bottom of the screen, there is no specific place to do it.
The fingerprint reader placed on the back, right next to the camera is clearly not an advantage. If you use it on a daily basis, you risk getting the camera dirty because you'll be looking blindly for the sensor location and thus... Expect to clean the camera very regularly.
Fortunately, we can count on the iris sensor and facial recognition on the front panel that do their job well and can be combined. This is the alternative solution we recommend on this model.
The smartphone is entirely covered with "Gorilla Glass 5" but we still advise you to add a dedicated accessory to be safe in case of a fall. The colors are quite dark, which gives a very elegant and classy charm but leaves room for fingerprints that stand out more in these color choices. We will ignore this detail since we clearly can't have everything.
The heating temperature is 37.5°C maximum if we push the S8+ to its maximum limits in video games. This is a good score since it is one of the lowest temperatures in the field of high-end smartphones.
Screen:
If there is one area where Samsung is at the forefront of technology, it is the screens! Every year, the screens of its smartphones occupy the place of the best screens on the market.
This year, it's the same recipe: A superb Super AMOLED screen that offers an almost infinite contrast, an incalculable range of colors and an almost zero remanence time. Comparing this to direct competitors, namely the iPhone 7 Plus or the LG G6 which still offer an LCD screen ... there is no photo, this Samsung is far ahead.
The maximum brightness reaches 600 cd/m² and the minimum brightness is 1.7 cd/m², which translates into a perfect visibility in sunlight and a comfortable viewing at night. The light reflection is 10% and the touch delay is doubled: 95 ms. In use, we do not notice this loss, the smartphone is fluid in all circumstances.
When unpacked, the Galaxy S8+ is calibrated in 2220 x 1080 px (Full HD +). However, 3 modes are available: it is possible to downgrade to 1440 x 1080 px (HD+) or upgrade to 2560 x 1440 px (WQHD+).
So by default, Samsung uses the middle ground between these two definitions. It is the most versatile for each use because it does not consume the maximum energy but at the same time, we are not on the simple HD +. In addition, FHD+ and WQHD+ have no visible difference to the naked eye in most cases, favor the max for VR or video games with well-detailed graphics.
Multimedia:
Combined with alternative apps (e.g. VLC) from the Google Play Store that accepts most encodings (e.g. AVI not supported by the Samsung player), this great model is a real pleasure to watch. You'll spend hours watching Youtube videos or Netflix series on the go.
The mini-Jack 3.5 mm output allows you to connect your favorite wireless headphones and earphones and the rendering is quite good, as every year.
The arrival of Bluetooth 5.0 brings a big novelty: the Dual Audio sends audio streams on two different receivers. For example, you can watch a series with a friend and send the audio stream to 2 pairs of wireless headphones. This way, everyone will be immersed in the movie or series in question.
The speakers at the top and bottom of the screen provide a stereo sound that we like.
The Exynos 8895 chip and the Mali G-71 iGPU offer an excellent display from a graphical point of view and a surprising fluidity/speed. Moreover, Samsung adds a Game Tools option which is a set of tools allowing to record the game live, to manage notifications, to force the display in full screen of a game and many other functions dedicated to the game.
Photo:
The main photo module is identical to the Galaxy S8 "small format", so we will talk about the second 12MP sensor offering optical stabilization and autofocus as fast as ever.
The photos have a superb rendering, the colorimetry is correct and the backlight is rather well controlled, it is appreciable. We progress again this year with the Bokeh mode (portrait) which allows to take a picture with a blurred effect behind the subject. Be careful not to get too close to the subject, otherwise distortions can be seen.
The optical stabilization is also used for video, supported by a good management of light transitions. The camera can shoot in 4K but Full HD is more than enough to capture your moments.
The front sensor goes to 8 MP and the difference is noticeable compared to the S8 "small format". The renders are finer and more detailed and the Bokeh function is also available.
Battery life:
Battery-wise, the S8+ goes to 3500 mAh versus 3000 mAh on the smaller model.
The autonomy is rather correct. With "standard" use (calls, SMS, videos, games, internet) and the Always On option activated, the smartphone lasts between 1.5 days and 2 days.
Fast charging is possible and a full charge lasts 1h40.
