Apple updates its phablet with this second version. The recipe remains the same since the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus in 2014 was a success. On the menu, a larger display than the iPhone 6S, optical stabilization, a larger battery, and overall stronger performance.
It features the same internal equipment as the iPhone 6s:
- An Apple mobile chip A9 dual-core clocked at 1.8 GHz
- A 2 GB RAM
- Storage capacity available in 16, 64, and 128 GB (non-expandable)
- A 2750 mAh battery
- A dedicated haptic engine for 3D Touch to detect pressure levels on the screen.
For wireless connectivity, Apple moves to 4G LTE category 6 (theoretical maximum speed up to 300 Mbps) and offers dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac MIMO, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS.
The screen is equipped with a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel (1920 x 1080 px resolution on a 14 cm diagonal), and the camera features a 12 MP rear sensor with optical stabilization, capable of recording 4K video. On the front, there is a 5 MP sensor.
The iPhone 6S Plus retains the same curves as the smaller model. Therefore, we have a visually identical device to the iPhone 6 Plus, 5.5 inches, 0.2 mm thicker (7.3 mm), and 20 grams heavier (192 g) compared to the 2014 model.
The screen still occupies 68% of the front surface. However, this year, 3D Touch makes its appearance. This technology allows access to options based on the pressure applied to the screen. There are 3 levels of pressure, which can address the challenges of the large screen.
The large screen of this model is much more comfortable for reading or screen viewing. It would have been nice to eliminate the large borders at the ends (those of the front camera and the "home" button) to offer total immersion, but it's not happening this year. It features a mini-jack port and well-expanded stereo sound.
This smartphone handles current games smoothly. Most of the time, games are optimized for the iPhone, providing more graphic effects and optimizations.
The camera of the iPhone 6S Plus is one of the best camera phones on the market. However, this year, Apple is surpassed by competitors like LG and Samsung.
The sensor goes from 8 to 12 MP, sharpness is increased, and focus is very fast despite some slight slowdowns that may occur at times. Colors are still true to reality and beautiful.
In low light, there is some noise and a loss of details.
In terms of video, there is the arrival of 4K/UHD. For Full HD, optical stabilization is available, offering one of the best stabilizations on the market. The quality is perfect, clear, detailed, and sharp. For UHD, it's a big novelty in the mobile world; optical stabilization is available in 4K on this smartphone. However, the results are less effective than in Full HD.
Recording continues until the storage space is filled without interruption, and no overheating seems to be detected.
The front sensor goes from 1.9 to 5 MP. The competition offers better results in terms of selfies, but the result is still of good quality. Additionally, Apple offers adaptive flash via the screen of the iPhone 6S Plus. This flash emits light before taking the photo to illuminate the face. A practical system, especially when the subject is close to the sensor.
The battery has a capacity of 2,750mAh compared to 2,915 mAh on the 2014 "Plus" model, a loss of 5%. This is due to the haptic engine of 3D Touch which reserves its place under the hood.
However, this loss is not serious since based on the iPhone 6 Plus from 2014, the results in terms of autonomy were excellent. These 5% of loss will therefore have a low impact.
In terms of video streaming, it is possible to spend about 10 hours on Netflix and 6 to 10 hours depending on the energy consumption of games.
In intensive use (calls, messages, web, games, navigation, etc.) throughout the day, this iPhone easily lasts the day + the next morning. With moderate use, it can easily last 2 full days.
This "Plus" model is one of the most enduring smartphones of the moment; its battery is very strong.
Regarding charging, there is no ultra-fast function like Samsung, nor wireless charging. You will need to use the provided cable and expect about 2.5 hours for a full recharge.
