In 2017, Samsung revolutionizes smartphones from a design point of view and tries to send its users to a new galaxy!
Technical features:
Noticeable at first glance:
Both hold a very high definition of 2960 x 1440 px to stick to its unprecedented ratio of 18.5:9 (against 16:9 traditionally). The format is therefore longer than the previous range of S7.
Under the slab, there is an octa-core mobile chip Samsung Exynos 8895 engraved in 10 nm and clocked at 2.3 GHz (4 cores Exynos M2 house + 4 cores ARM Cortex-A53), a RAM of 4 GB and internal storage of 64 GB (expandable via a microSD card).
The camera remains almost unchanged from 2016, with an optically stabilized module, a 12MP Sony sensor, Laser autofocus, Dual Pixel AF technology for sensor construction and a Xenon flash.
On the front, there is an 8MP sensor and an iris scanner. For connectivity, the wired part is provided by a USB-C port and a mini-Jack headphone output, while the wireless compiles Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS + GLONASS, NFC and all the necessary 4G LTE bands, including the 700 MHz (B28).
Finally, its modem is compatible with the 4G Gigabit network, but the network rollout in France won't take you there yet. On the back, the glass and metal shell is waterproof (IP68) and powered by a 3,000 mAh battery on the S8 and 3,500 mAh on the S8+. Wireless charging is available (optional).
Ergonomics and design:
The promotional images of the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ smartphone showed strong potential in terms of aesthetics. Once in hand, the sensations are exceptional. The edge-to-edge screen on the front, the perfect assembly of the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both sides and the metallic outline, the 8 mm thickness, the light weight... Everything is perfect on the finishing side!
For the most meticulous, at the level of the shell, the choice of glass implies visible fingerprints on the darkest colors, but also a sliding of the mobile in the hand.
With more than 83% of the front surface occupied and despite an 18.5:9 format that lengthens the device, the grip is good and one-handed use is very pleasant. We also point out that the home button has disappeared in favor of an interaction hidden under the screen and responding to pressure like an iPhone 7 (which kept the location of the button but removed the physical button). Indeed, the finger is pressed by haptic feedback sensation as in the competitor.
This year, the S8 range recovers the iris scanner of the Note 7 and also adds facial recognition, via the front photo sensor.
For the iris scanner, works well and registration is fast. If you wear glasses, you will be asked to remove them. Samsung also advises, if possible, to remove them for the proper reading in unlocking. However, the reading works with glasses, but less well.
For facial recognition, the unlocking is instantaneous and detects photos, so no possibility of duping him a priori.
For the case of the fingerprint reader that is located on the back, it offers an ultra-fast unlocking, even when the device is in standby and also allows some navigation movements. The only problem... it's right next to the camera. Between the left-handed person who will look for the button, and the right-handed person who will have his finger sticking out on the camera, we often end up with fingerprints on the lens.
Finally, there are 3 physical buttons on the side edges. On the right, the On/Off, on the left, the volume and the button dedicated to the AI Bixby.
Screen:
With a Super Amoled panel, the Galaxy S8 and its big brother have a near-infinite contrast, accompanied by a nice maximum brightness of 595 cd/m². The slab handles reflections quite well (light reflection rate of 10%), so outdoor use will never be a problem. For the comfort of reading, Samsung integrates 3 different definitions: HD+ (1480 x 720 px), FHD+ (2220 x 1080 px, offered at launch) and WQHD+ (2960 x 1440 px).
Color rendering is excellent, with good balance and fidelity.
Camera:
On the photo side, the improvements will be mainly in the software part. It seems that the new construction and processing promote a better white balance in full light and low light, as well as a management of contrasts and backlight even better supported by the sensor.
Another point to note is that there is less loss of detail in the corners of the image. Finally, the processing is smoother in the image, especially in low light.
The Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ smartphone offers a remarkable behavior in high light with a little more contrast and colors that remain overall perfect. In terms of focus, whether in low or high light, it is instantly unlike its competitors.
On the video side, the stabilization is one of the best on the market, the motion compensation remains flexible and the light transitions are managed perfectly well.
The front sensor increases to 8 MP (5 MP on the GS7) and the notable gain in detail is consequent. The speed of reaction is there and fans of selfies will not be disappointed!
Unlike the iPhone and its "Plus" model, there is no difference in the photo between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphone.
Battery life:
The battery of the Samsung Galaxy S8 has a capacity of 3000 mAh (identical to the S7) and 3500 mAh for the S8+ despite a longer screen, increased power and new features, so the task seems more complicated for the Korean...
The difference in autonomy will be seen depending on the definition chosen and the features activated (Always On ...). However, Samsung has managed to maintain a similar autonomy to that of the Galaxy S7 for each mode activated for the S8.
You will easily last a day with standard use on an S8 and 2 days with an S8+.
