With Galaxy S6, Samsung has completely changed its way of thinking and designing things, since all the advantages that Samsung used to brandish publicly to distinguish itself from Apple's products have disappeared.
Let's take the example of the multi-capacity version of this smartphone (32, 64 and 128GB). Indeed, it is no longer possible to insert a micro SD card. Furthermore, there are the aluminium and glass that replaced the famous plastic, or the prices that are almost cloned on the competitor. Also, the waterproofing that was present on the Galaxy S5, is no longer relevant.
Samsung has therefore decided to align itself with the competitor and offer something similar, withAndroid. It's a risky gamble as fans of the brand may not appreciate all these changes... Nevertheless, we have tested this product to have a complete opinion.
Samsung offers a 5.1-inch Super Amoled screen (12.9 cm diagonal), the same size as Galaxy S5 but with a higher definition (2560 x 1440 px, against 1920 x 1080 px on the GS5). Underneath there is the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7420 chip, an octa-core SoC. GS6 also has 3GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac MIMO, a revised and improved fingerprint sensor and a 16MP camera with optical stabilisation (rear sensor up to UHD (4K) and front sensor of 5MP).
GS6 is powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop, but Samsung's in-house TouchWiz interface covers it all, in a version that is said to be more fluid and simple.
The various versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone are priced at €709, €799 and €899 respectively with 32, 64 and 128GB of storage capacity.
Plastic is left aside for aluminium and reinforced glass. This is a smartphone covered with two glass layers, surrounded by an aluminium ring. When held in hand, this smartphone feels like a high-end product with beautiful touches.
On its back, the camera sensor is evident. For some people, this may be disturbing for the fear of breaking the camera, but it is quite sturdy, stable when placed on a table and it does not disturb when in pocket. Also, if you really want to put the smartphone back to the same thickness, a simple protective shell is enough to keep the camera from sticking out.
On the front, the fingerprint sensor has been redesigned and no longer requires users to slide up and down as in the GS5. It is now possible to simply place your finger on the sensor (as in iPhone).
To finish this presentation, the grip is excellent; Galaxy S6 grips well in the hand thanks to the aluminium that surrounds it.
The Amoled screen offers an excellent color fidelity, the viewing angles are optimized, the maximum brightness reaches 360 cd/m2 and allows a good vision indoors and outdoors in any weather.
With a pixel density of 576 dots per inch, the comfort is good.
The only point that remains to be improved is the white, which is still a bit "bluish" depending on your point of view. Whites that Apple offers in its iPhones are almost perfect.
Samsung's video player is still perfect. It reads almost all video formats, whether in SD, HD or FULL HD.
It is also possible to put a video on a corner of the screen while you are doing something else. The headphone output has excellent sound quality, with very good power, very low distortion (0.005%), a wide dynamic range, and above all very good stereophony.
The product has a single speaker with a powerful reproduction, but with distortion when it is pushed to the limit. The only downside is that when the smartphone is used in landscape mode, the speaker grille can be hidden by the hand and the sound is muffled.
Videowise, this smartphone has a supercharged Mali-T760 MP8 iGPU: Exynos 7. There is fluidity and graphic quality is well done.
There is a 16MP sensor (as on the GS5), but this time the components have been processed at Sony. The outcome was a good optical stabilization.
Video capturing gets at intermediate level between Full HD and Ultra HD/4K (Full HD at 60 fps + QHD at 2560 x 1440 px) as well as an improved slow motion capture, with 340 fps against 120 fps previously. For the front sensor, the increase from 2.1 to 5 Mpix is welcome. As for the wide angle, the quality of the rendering and the reactivity of the camera were augmented.
Galaxy S6's battery capacity is lower than that of its predecessor, which is quite surprising. Galaxy S5's 2,800mAh is now 2,550mAh. Once again, this choice is surprising since the new octocore chip and the WQHD Amoled screen are quite energy consuming...
In the end, after testing, we noticed that the autonomy is similar to the Galaxy S5, or even a bit worse, but it's a close call. With basic usage, this smartphone lasts easily for a day and a half while S5 could last until the second evening. With more advanced usage (video games, social networks), you can easily last the day.
The Ultra Power Saving Mode is also available, which allows you to conserve battery power for a few extra hours by turning off most wireless communications. With video streaming on Netflix, battery proved itself to be quite enduring, with nearly 9h30 of use, or about ten episodes of a TV series.
Charging the smartphone takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, which is a very fast charge compared to the time of use. Induction charging takes twice as long.
